What is this finding and what is the diagnosis?
This is an H&E stain showing numerous hematoxylin bodies. These are diagnostic of lupus nephritis. Hematoxylin bodies are lavender, homogenous remnants of nuclei opsonized with anti-nuclear antibodies and ingested by phagocytes. These were first recognized in the bone marrow, and were called “LE cells”. There are also wire loops (blue arrows, Figure 2), mesangial and endocapillary hypercellularity.
